Depending on how you look at it, the game was a battle between two teams imposing their defensive will on their opponent, or two teams utterly incapable of putting together a sustained drive, but someone had to win. Either way the outcome was a 6-3 victory for the (9-7) Seattle Seahawks over the (4-10) Chicago Bears at Soldier Field. The game was so void of offense neither team scored a single point in the 2nd half.
That being said, there were some positive takeaways from the Seahawks offense. The running back tandem of Zach Charbonnet and Kenny McIntosh rushed for over 100 yards collectively, and most importantly Geno Smith threw no interceptions.
“When you score six points, you’re going to come away thinking you can do a lot of things better. I really want to say I think we could have been better, but also moved the ball well. Very proud of the way we ran the ball,” Smith said when asked about their offensive performance. “I thought we were effective, efficient, in the passing game. Could have used a few more explosive, but they did a good job.”
Jason Myers kicked two field goals for the Seahawks only points of the game. One on the games first possession and another one just before halftime. Whereas the Bears Cairo Santos’ 42 yard attempt was his only field goal attempt of the game.
The defense had a bounce back game recording seven sacks and an interception. Leonard Williams led the way with two sacks, and also compiled five sacks. Continuing to show why he’s a candidate for the NFL’s defensive player of the year award.
“He should be up for all the accolades. I don’t know what the awards are out there, but I would give it to him,” said Seahawks head coach Macdonald about Williams, the 10 year veteran defensive tackle. “He’s just a phenomenal player, phenomenal human being. I’m glad he’s a Seahawk. Glad he’s with us.”
Unfortunately, the win wasn’t enough to propel the Seahawks into the playoffs. Kyler Murray (as predicted) was not up to the task of playing spoiler against the Los Angeles Rams, and all of the other improbable scenarios to clear a path to the playoffs never came to fruition.
The silver lining is there’s still an opportunity for the Seahawks to finish the season with double-digit victories, since winning the division in 2020, and build on the chemistry and momentum created down the stretch. Although the final game against the rival Los Angeles Rams has no playoff implications, hopefully the team can finish strong and continue their rebuilding process. Stay tuned.
